Frequently Asked Questions

Q. Okay, slots will help racing. How will they benefit the state and local communities?

A.
Conservative estimates are that slots at Maryland racetracks will generate at least $700 million a year in gaming taxes for state and local uses. Perhaps more meaningful are the additional jobs and spending that will result from slots. Economic analyses based on experience in other markets indicates there will be more than 3,500 direct jobs created, with more than $350 million in new spending and almost $100 million in new earnings. Indirect economic impact will add another 3,500 additional jobs, more than $300 million in new spending and $100 million in indirect earnings. In other words, slots at the tracks will provide a major economic boost to the state, particularly in the local communities where new jobs and indirect spending will have meaningful, permanent impact. The racing industry, too, is projected to grow significantly as a result of new investment in horses and facilities, adding more than 3,000 new jobs at the tracks, training centers, and farms. The Maryland racing and breeding industry will once again be recognized as among the leaders in America and beyond.
