Q. If slot machines are authorized by legislative action, where will
they be located?
A. The Governor is to hold a referendum November 2008 on
the
legalization of slot machines in Baltimore, Allegany, Anne
Arundel, Cecil and Worcester counties.
Q. How many slot machines would be authorized?
A. The five locations would have 15,000 slot machines distributed
between them. 4,750 slot machines for Anne Arundel County, 1,500
in Allegany county 3,700 in Baltimore, 2,500 in Cecil County which
is near the Delaware border, 2,500 in Worcester County.
Q. Why slot machines now?
A. Maryland is facing a significant projected $1.7 billion
budget shortfall in the upcoming year and slots revenues would
ease the budget crisis and assist in funding other state initiatives.
In addition, authorization of slot machines at tracks in Delaware,
West Virginia has resulted in more than $400 million in Maryland
dollars being wagered at those locations annually. Not only is
this a significant economic loss to the state, but it has placed
Maryland's racing industry at a severe competitive disadvantage.
